I had the same problem. I found the answer here:

All you have to do is edit ~/.glest/glest.ini and add a line with
AutoTest=0

This may as well be the screensaver or other screen power save
features. Can you please try disabling them? If this is indeed the
problem I'll see what I can do (setting up an inhibit or whatever).

(I saw your comment only now.)
I just upgraded to 9.04. Now the program doesn't even start. When run
from terminal, I get the following error:
Exception: Error accessing value: AutoTest in: glest.ini
Value not found in propertyMap: AutoTest, loaded from: glest.ini

Not really.
The first thing you could do is, if you're using Compiz, try switching
to Metacity before you play (by pressing Alt+F2 and writing metacity
--replace into the Run dialogue which will pop up). Does it still
happen without Compiz?

driver, window manager or wherever else.
