I've maybe be same problem as you.
X crash completely on startup or shows a destroyed window.
The fix for me is to enable the memory share for the grafics. Maybe the
sideport memory is not working with the fglrx driver.

The problem is out of date for me: the
ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run work...
It allow 3D... So...
So, may be this bug report is out of date?

Hi,
I also noticed that the problem got better with 9.6, but on karmic, i'm now
experimenting with it, the sriver still detects the monitor wrong (see the
xrandr.out from above). When I'm pressing Ctrl-Alt-+/- it switches to
640x480 with the refresh rate 60Hz but the image is in the upper left

tested it with normal Kubuntu jaunty (fresh installed). The result: driver
works partly. I've installed it with the
ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run package by building jaunty packages.
After installation and a reboot X crashed and the PC reboots. After entering

I also have problems with the fglrx driver. When I boot up with fglrx I
only get a frequency out of range message from my monitor. ( It runs at
43.0 Hz) I can fix this by running xrandr blindly (login and Alt + F2
without seeing something) but then I get 4 distorted ubuntu logos in the
upper part

It seems i meet the same bug. After installing fglrx video device shows
two blurred and very distorted ubuntu words in upper part of screen. I
think it`s a ghost image of mine gdm-login-screen.
