In case you had the errors consistently with the same software (eg
always had the bug with win32-image-writer but never with usb-
imagewriter), please let us know, it might be a bug in the writing
software. If you had the issue with dd, then it's likely a hardware
issue only.

from a terminal (in Accessories) from a live session?

I can't give you ~/.xsession-errors from the installation session since
there's nothing to do but hard reboot when the screen blanks out.
Switching to a virtual console doesn't work at that point either.
Here's what I get in /var/log/installer/debug when running ubiquity -d
from the live session:
This looks like a corrupted image; could you rewriting it with dd or
writing it to another key? Thanks!

also can you run:
md5sum ubuntu-9.04-netbook-remix-i386.img
(in a terminal in the directory where you stored the .img file)
and paste the output to the bug ...

I double checked the md5sum which was indeed correct. Rewrote the image
with dd and it worked. Rewrote the image one more time and got the same
issues as my first attempt. I would say it's probably time to throw this
USB stick out the window. Thanks for checking into this guys!
