Tried to uninstall packages, but I can't get into the synaptic package
manager and when I run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" it again stalls when
the installation process gets to the mail merge part. I have to hold
down the power to turn off the comp and unfreeze it.

whole comp freezes when trying trying to install open office suite, freezes
