I have been reading a lot about this issue and even tried the Xorg
AccelMethod XAA from one of the earlier posts. It rendered my
notebook unable to boot Ubuntu 9.04 at all, and I had to use the
Recovery / automatically repair graphics tool (which restored the
original Xorg.conf file) to get it

I have exactly the same problem as it appears on chrisi's screenshot
above, but with an ATI 7500 GPU (R100) on a Compaq Pressario 2800.

Confirm bug on clean install of ubuntu 9.04 on a Lenovo Thinkpad X301.
Some characters become corrupted after time and changing the font size
changes which characters are corrupted.

I've done a bit of reading and I think this is a memory leak bug in the
intel driver. I've been using the driver in UXA mode and recently
upgraded to the optimal driver in the guide in the forums. (Which
means I probably shouldn't be reporting bugs)

I have the same problem with upgrade to ubuntu 9.04 and also if I boot from CD.
IBM Thinkpad X30 with Intel 830 graphics controller.
The fonts are corrupted in all programms after about 5 minutes.
If you need more information please let me know.

I have determined that the issue appears to be with 9.04 kernel
2.6.28.11-generic. If I boot into 2.6.27.11 the issue goes away and the
fonts no longer degrade over time. I have set back all the default
setting and all is good with 2.6.27.11.

An Update from 4-28-2009 started my font degradation as well.
System 9.04 upgraded from 8.10 with no issues.
xorg.conf is generic and no settings. Adding Intel as driver made no
difference.
This is a Dell notebook with 845 Intel Graphics (rev 1)
