Yes I know what you mean about using the format table dialog, but it is
substantially more difficult than simply snapping the alignment arrows
(sorry, I dont know their proper name) on the ruler.

Oh, I think I might know what you are talking about now and I think the
reason you think it isn't working is that the grey arrows only appear to
format text and not the tables themselves. To format the tables you have
to use the format table dialog.

No ruler snapping in Writer
I'm not certain what you are talking about with respect to the gray
alignment arrows.
For alignment of tables does the format tables dialog not give you
sufficient information to align them properly? It seems to allow me to
set the table exactly where I want it on the page.
