Seems fixed

** Description changed:

  Hi,

Until yesterday I've been happy with Jauty, using the laptop display
left of the external monitor. The virtual size in xorg.conf is set large
  enough to allow this.

Yesterday there was an update of several X-related packages.

Now I can use either the laptop or the original monitor, but neither
with gnome-display-properties nor with xrandr can I set the desired
  screen configuration.

Using gnome-display-properties I can set up the configuration, but upon
the required reboot I again get the faulty configuration.

Using xrandr, I get an error message stating that the display size I
require were out of range (2048x2048 instead of 2880x1200).

  Please do advise.

+ UPDATE: Problems seems solved by applying today's updates.
