reproduce this issue with either of the supplied files on my system
using Intel 4500 graphics, which should be much slower than nvidia.

To give an idea of the performance, I downloaded this document:

I selected cell A1 and started spinning the mouse wheel to see

Oh, I see what happened. My questions didn't get saved. :-\
I did not have an slowness moving around in and manipulating the
attached spreadsheet. Are all documents slow, or just this one? Was it
slow in earlier versions of OpenOffice or in previous Ubuntu releases?

Neither do I see this problem on windows with OO 3.0 or 3.1 on Windows,
with the same document.
I see this problem on Ubuntu Jaunty running OO 3.1, with both the open
source, and closed source nvidia video drivers.
