After the latest updates, I too cannot get my external drive to mount.
I captured the error message. Please let me know what other information
you need.

I have the same problem. The external drive did mount but not anymore
after latest updates! I get DBus error
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply
(timeout by message bus) when i click on a harddrive to mount, then i
can klick on OK and the drive disappears.

My desktop Karmic partition has the same issues. Also running Karmic
2.6.30-10-generic
Gnome 2.27.3.
The message varies, sometime the one I reported, also the one reported
by Kamikaze321 , and 'Cannot get volume.fstype.alternative'.

Same information on other screenshots of main partition and USB external
drive. They all mount when I boot in Jaunty.
