[Bug 407692] Re: Icon for Transmission does not suggest the program's purpose

2012-01-03 Thread Jani Uusitalo
I think it's worse than just that the icon doesn't convey the program's purpose: it looks way too much like a flatbed scanner. I appreciate the difficulty in crafting a descriptive visual representation of a BT client, but IMHO an icon should at least be sufficiently unique so as to avoid

Marking as WontFix for a handful of reasons: 1. There are no graphical artists upstream. 2. It's upstream's opinion that this is an impossible task. BitTorrent is an abstract concept that doesn't fit well into a 20x20 icon. Would one use up and down arrows? And, does that really make any more

First, i considered something like a web to show that it uses a p2p network, but then i thought if we're changing the icon, we're probably only helping people who don't even know the implications of any of that-- so something even simpler like a download icon would make more sense

Sorry, Humanity isn't going to fix this problem. As stated before, there are tons of apps that have icons not related to their purpose. If a 'fix' is going to come, it has to come from upstream. Good luck :D ** Changed in: humanity Status: New = Won't Fix ** Changed in: humanity

(I'm an upstream dev) I agree with the basic suggestion this ticket makes, but have no idea what kind of icon to use that would intrinsically say BitTorrent client. If someone were to submit an icon that did this, I'd consider using it to follow the HiG, but IMO it's an impossible task. FWIW:

I agree that the current icon isn't the best as it doesn't mean anything at the first glance. But it can be said for other icons from your screenshot - Ekiga, Firefox and Pidgin all has icons that has nothing to do with their purpose. Ekiga and Pidgin are replaced in Karmic by Empathy that has a
