With karmic, has anyone tried opening sftp:// Open Office documents ?
When I double-click on .xls files on an sftp:// volume, I get:
Could not display sftp://remote/file.xls;.
There is no application installed for Excel spreadsheet files

I should have mentioned that I am using Free-NX. I think this is
relevant, since I just noticed that there is no file system mounted in
~/.gvfs/ when I access an sftp:// volume with Free-NX.
I tried opening an sftp://.xls file in karmic without Free-NX (just a

I believe this issue has been resolved in Jaunty (Ubuntu 9.04) due to
switching to using gvfs fuse instead of gnome-vfs/gio directly. If you
still have trouble please feel free to reopen this bug and follow up
with more information.

I have the same problem in OOo 3.0 on Ubuntu 8.10. The files rw or read-only.
Here's a workaround to get read access though:
Gvfs has its own folder in the home folder called .gvfs where you can access
all gvfs mounted drives. If I navigate to the file and open it through
Nautilus, OOo will
Ok, this problem is exist , but you can try to setup NSF disks and files
can be read and write by OpenOffice and any other programs , you can see
movies or listen ogg , or mp3 from the disk with mounting is by NSF
protocol not sftp , sftp is good for transfer file by network , not to
open and
** Description changed:
Pop an openoffice document on a sftp:// 'share' under gnome, attempt to
open. File will open in read-only mode, even if permissions are
otherwise correct.
A text-file in the same directory, will open in read-write mode with no
problems in gedit, which
I have been having the same problem(s) in fedora9 both OOo 2.4.X and
3.0. Thought the information might be useful. Using the public/private
key as described above but did not change the symptoms. Still looking
for a workaround.

I have had the same problem for a while now.a local Linux Engineer
told me to set up SSH public /private keys. You will have to have the
login and password on the local and remote server the same. Set up the
keys as follows:
SSH Version 2
Step 1
at the command line typessh-keygen
Problem exists for me as well in Ubuntu 8.04. I cannot open a file via
sftp. It asks for my password twice and then gives a General Internet
Error. I've gotten around this by running Open Office Calc via a ssh
session, but this is a very slow way and taxing on my server.
Thanks,
Keith

Hi All,
For me the problem still exists with OO.org in Hardy (fresh install
latest beta updates as of 9/4/08)
This is for files with read write permissions. The OO dialog asks for
password but fails after 3-4 tries with General Internet Error. I have
seen this behavior since feisty..

As described in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/41985/comments/11,
opening document with read-only permissions at a remote location doesn't work.
