Alberto, can you please have a look here?
It doesn't happen on Kubuntu, so I suppose compiz is triggering
something that makes -ati crash.
If we can't fix the driver easily, we have the fallbck option of
blacklisting compiz on those cards, too.

I don't think it helps much, but I started the live system on a computer
with an RV630 (which has this problem), and if I do compiz --replace I
just get:

It doesn't crash but calls probably exit in r600_dri.so. So some package is
not having correct stuff for r600 3D to work. You might find some info from
gdm.log or where ever the Xserver stderr is going to.

Just to let you know.
I have run the install command from the initial cd menu (rather than
going into live desktop) and now I get the correct res working
correctly. I'm going to install from here and see if it is just an
issue with accessing the cd with xsplash etc that is causing the
Okay, so this just gets weirder.
I purge removed xsplash to ensure that wasn't the issue. It isn't.
Session type xterm works flawlessly, as did installing direct from menu
rather than live desktop.
Session type gnome dies a horrible flame death of fail.

Attached is a short video. The first part is the login to an xterm
session. The second attempt is a login to a gnome session. I think the
last frame got lopped off when I stopped the camera but effectively it
goes back to the login screen.

Bryce.
I have installed the newer Kubuntu and the ati driver is working with
it. However the display is 2/3's of an inch left and a 1/3 of an inch
down.
version number is 1.6.29.99+git20090825.fc74e119-0
I'm assuming therefore that this might be due to a usplash/xsplash/metacity...
