I'm having the some problems.
I have a costly Sound Blaster system with seven speakers plus the woofer and I
just get the woofer and the two front speakers playing. I have the latest
Ubuntu version. I have one Audigy SE and it's a pity just having sound on two
speakers

I have a problem with this soundcard, and sounds aplicattions like
Audacity, Ardour, etc, I can't record in Tracks (more than one track
and play that was recorded), and playback, i configured it of all
possible modes,

Seems the card is ^(*( , no hardware acceleration.
Ubunutu should provide a blacklist of hardware which doesn't work well
on Linux so manufactures will provide better support to the developers.
If I knew what I know
funny enough, as already mentioned all together the channels do not play except
the front left/rights.
However in xmms for instance if configured under options preferences
output plugin ALSA 1.2.10 configure audio device setting - should you
choose hw:0,0 hw:0,1 hw:0,2 it does play
