By adding acpi_backlight=vendor to the kernel line in menu.lst, the
problem goes away. However I'm then unable to adjust the screen
brightness via the function key buttons. Does this help in finding the
issue?

It's not just the touchpad that works erratically. Same problem happens
when I connect a wired USB mouse. Problem is same on my existing
installation, which was upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10, and also on a fresh
9.10 install from a 9.10 64-bit iso download.
There was no such problem when I was
