I confirm this bug on a fresh gutsy beta installation (AMD64 desktop
CD).
It exists since at least version 6.04 on both amd64 and x86.
Not sure, but it seems the POSTINSTALL script is done with ATI parameter
and with US keyboard.
my file provides bad section after nvidia-glx-config enable

Gusty too.

Confirmed on Kubuntu Feisty 20070417, AMD64 version. Same behavior that
others have described. In my case the correct BusID is PCI:0:5:0 but
nvidia-glx-config changed it to PCI:1:5:0 and broke X. I had to fix
it by hand.

Running nvidia-glx-config enable breaks X.
It appears that the script is doing all the wrong things. All it should
do is sed the nv driver to nvidia, and do some sedding on the modules if
needed, that way it doesn't touch anything it isn't supposed to (such as
the pci id, sync rates etc.)

Running nvidia-glx-config enable breaks X.
Confirmed on the latest Feisty beta as well. After a fresh install of
Kubuntu I used 'Add/Remove Programs' to install nvidia-glx and ran 'sudo
nvidia-glx-config enable'. When I rebooted I was presented with a black
screen and had to use the console to recover to the previous
configuration.

As a further followup I walked someone through fixing this same issue in
the IRC channel today. Martin's suggestion to use nvidia-xconfig
worked for this user as well. I think his recommendation should be
enacted soon.

Running nvidia-glx-config enable breaks X.
On an HP DV6000t with a Geforce Go 7400 this kills the X config as well.
I fixed the dead X config by reverting back to the old generic config
that nvidia-glx-config saves. Then, instead of running nvidia-glx-
config enable I ran nvidia-xconfig which worked like a charm,
preserved my X config,
This problem is still present on Edgy final.
The changes it made are the same as what I posted before except that the
BusID is changed to PCI:1:5:0 instead of PCI:0:5:0.

Running nvidia-glx-config
Same thing here (fully updated edgy), sudo nvidia-glx-config enable
generated a bad xorg.conf breaking X. It set the wrong BusID to the
same bad value as others mention : PCI:0:5:0 - mine is supposed to be
PCI:2:0:0
It also completely lost all my monitor resolutions, setting to the same
low

2 issues: default xorg config shows up as modified for the purposes of
that script (and presumably for any auto-update-xorg-config reasons,
like a large xorg update?) , plus the changing of the bus ID

Running nvidia-glx-config enable
I am experiencing what is probably the same problem. nvidia-glx-config
enable made the following changes:
--- xorg.conf 2006-08-11 17:13:25.0 -0400
+++ /etc/X11/xorg.conf 2006-08-11 17:13:40.0 -0400

Same happening here. After installing nvidia-glx and running sudo
nvidia-glx-configure enakubuntu-6.06-alternate-amd64.ble the X-server
crashes. The xorg.conf and the log produced while not starting are
attached.
My workaround: The kubuntu-6.06-alternate-amd64-CD installed on another
