Since no one was responding to this ...
I tried removing the whole 'java-common' package...
and then reinstalled it, and this error went off.

Trying to install audacity gives pretty much the same list of errors...

installArchives() failed: perl: warning: Setting locale failed.

Since then, there have been a few updates (security / automatic updates)
and although all install successfully, but all fail at the post-install
session with a long list of errors such as the one shown above.
In case you need any other output, I could easily provide it.
