Try running sudo apt-get clean and re-upgrading. It looks like the .deb
package got corrupted during its download.

This bug can be closed now - I ran apt-get clean and reinstalled gcc-4.4
with no issues this time.
It could have been due to the .deb file not being downloaded properly on
a flaky internet connection I think.
