OK I tried in Lucid and the behavior there is good, but it's certainly
valid in Karmic.
If you'll look here:

RE: my request to update grub-pc and grub-common in Lucid and Karmic
proposed Colin Watson said, By the way, we're not going
Just FYI I used apt to remove (NOT purge) grub-common and grub-pc, then
installed both using gdebi from:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/grub-pc
I followed that with only an update-grub and no problems whatsoever.
There was no need to purge and replace any of the existing configuration
files.
Ok so it's fix released.
If you want to have this fixed/changed in karmic you have to nominate this bug
for it.
** Changed in: grub2 (Ubuntu)
Status: New = Fix Released

I went ahead and nominated this for Karmic but I'd stress Colin Watson's
comment here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/485457/comments/4
While I'd like to see it fixed I can only say the current Lucid packages
work in Karmic for me.
I don't have a good enough understanding

I think that this bug effects anyone with a multi-boot system and an
inquiring mind. It really does need to be fixed.
