Thanks madb, eventually found it under:
/usr/share/openclipart/png/computer/icons/firefox.png
Not quite the place I was expecting to find it, so I wasn't looking
there before

I am seeing the same thing after an upgrade from 8.10
Tried forced reinstall of firefox from synaptic, still no icon.
As a workaround:
Where is the icon file supposed to be so I can fix it manually if it is
installed but not set?
Which package should I get to install it if it is missing?

It was preinstalled by default in Lucid alpha 2. I should have
