I, too, recently dealt with failed user login attempts, though on
Xubuntu 11.10. In short, after a successful login the user was
returned to the login screen. In my experience, the loop was indefinite.

Please file a new bug for issues in Xubuntu 11.10. The original issue
was in xsplash, which is no longer used. The last version with xsplash
was 11.04, therefore, an issue in 11.10 will not be the same.

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since
this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work,
I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here.
It may be possible to restore the user login by deleting the ~/.cache
and ~/.config
Also, make sure you have selected Xfce-session in the 'Sessions' box on
the gdm screen. There are usually two such items to select from, and you
could try both before doing the above removals.

Charlie, I deleted ~/.cache and everything in ~/.config/xfce4/ except
for the /panels folder (didn't wanna have to set it up again if I didn't
have to), and that seems to have solved the problem. Thanks! Also,
previously I had tried logging in with either Xfce-session listing, and
neither worked.
