It might not be related to this bug, but I notice as well that the 'You have X new messages' text is hard to see because it is dark grey on black (in Ambiance and Dust). I'm pretty sure this is new, ie the version of Pidgin in Ubuntu 9.10 doesn't do it. -- pidgin doesn't use theme background

@Rocko: did you restart your session after updating? The new pidgin tray icon is transparent for me in Dust and New Wave now... By default, the pidgin tray icon has been disabled for a couple of releases now. It's something you must turn on yourself. -- pidgin doesn't use theme background

I did restart - I even logged out and back in again. I was using the Ambiance theme, though so maybe that made a difference? But it is working correctly now. I've just upgraded pidgin to the ~md1 version (ie not just pidgin-data which was all I could upgrade yesterday) and just had to restart
