That is 7 months ago and Luicid has been released. I've setup several VMs since
then, and have never had that particular problem.
This issue should be closed: changing to invalid.

Update:
After another apt-get update upgrade, then
compiling and installing VMware tools v3.5.0-213532, the problem has
disappeared.
Its it perhaps related to the default graphics card?
