archlinux now has 2.6.34 (vanilla as usually I think) and the screen corruption looks a little different (flickering/scrolling instead of grey lines on black background) - radeon.modeset=0 still needed et/true combat: never installed it on ubuntu, but on archlinux and x1400 there is no problem
