Bingo. Disable wireless, remove ath5k and use Ethernet cable and it works great for lot longer than normal. Re-enable wireless and it crashes in 2 seconds flat. Sorry for wasting the X11 peoples time, need to reassign to the Linux Atheros driver team. [lspci] 03:00.0 Ethernet controller:

Ok. There's not a lot to go on in there. Could you please try booting with the “drm.debug=0x06” kernel option - just add this after “quiet splash”. That will make the kernel module much more verbose about what it's doing. Hopefully that will give some indication as to what it's doing when
