Thanks Andy. Would you like me to try the -rcX-lucid kernels sequentially and
see what works and what doesn't? Or is there a different approach we should

I guess the goal is to find a solution that will work for Lucid, as it's the
distro which has the problem, and also the distribution
@Andreas -- thanks for that. Yes we are not going to be able to back
out the .33 update as that is there to fix a great many other bugs. You
have confirmed that the bug is fixed in v2.6.34 and not in v2.6.33 so
you might consider a bisect across mainline there. There are some pre-
built kernels

Unfortunately the update that causes the bug is quite a big thing for
the lucid kernel (pulling the 2.6.33 DRM into the 2.6.32 kernel) so I
fear it won't can't be fixed. What you can do is to test the current
Maveric kernel, but this early in the release cycle the kernel will
change a lot over the

You're definitely on to something - as predicted, the 15th revision of
your compile does NOT work. So the suggested commit being the culprit
may very well be what's been causing all the fuss.

smb anoteng, Just supplies user-space half of some tools (perf afaik). For
testing it should be safe to force
apw anoteng, i think you were pretty unlucjy there, pretty sure that that
dependancy was not there for very long at all

I can confirm this bug. Did an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 last night.
Booting kernel-image-2.6.32-22-generic shows the second monitor jagged.
While booting kernel-image-2.6.31-21-generic there are no problems. Also
using the open source driver included in 10.04.

HP nx9420
ATI x1600 mobile

Apparently it is not recommended to modify /boot/grub/grub.cfg directly
(because this file will be overwritten next time update-grub is called)
A cleaner way to disable KMS is to modify /etc/default/grub instead, by
specifying:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=radeon.modeset=0
and call update-grub.

A workaround in to disable KMS at boot: I added radeon.modeset=0 in the kernel
options of the grub configuration and the problem seemed to disappear.
Here is the related line in /boot/grub/grub.cfg:

I have very similar problem with ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility HD
3670.
By using latest upstream kernel (2.6.34-999-generic #201004211003) it is
possible to use dual head, but the cable for the external monitor may be
connected only after I log in.

I'm supposedly using the open source driver included in 10.04 - no 3rd
party downloaded or installed. I attached dmesg's from a working and
non-working kernel. Let me know if you need additional info.

I also tried to see what the registers shows with radeontool. I'm attaching the
two outputs.
A diff produces this:
