An update: my current workaround is to put the laptop to sleep by closing the lid, plugging in the external mic and then waking up the machine again. It works! Not the best way out perhaps, but better than having to boot every time... -- line in doesnt work; mic does

Same problem here, which I had reported elsewhere (incorrectly probably, because my hardware is actually exactly what the OP has - Vostro 1500, STAC9205). Internal mic works, headphones and speakers work fine. External mic/line in works when plugged in before booting, but never recognized if
