to switch from compiz to metacity and viceversa, by terminal:
sudo metacity --replace
(to use metacity), this is just a temporarily switch that disable every special
effect and gives you the base desktop (without cube or others compiz plugins),
at the reboot your system will be

sudo metacity --replace doesn't make any difference when it comes to
the annoying dialog. It is still there. The graphical layout of the
windows changed dramatically!

metacity (without effects) or both?
Then please run in a terminal

If not disturbing, it would be great if you can test a live session of Natty
Assigned temporairily to xorg to analize gdm files too

Sorry for the long delay.
Netbooks (with Intel Atom) is slower than other modern processors and
therefore takes longer to perform a task. They then often puts the not
responding notice out to display annoying to often.
It is still there...

It is a Samsung netbook, bought some months ago.
One example that repeatedly shows the hang-message is when exiting
Firefox. I don't think it is about the memory, since I never have had a
unrecoverable crash; It justs takes long, so the described request comes up.
