No activity on this for a while, but I would like to mention that this
bug is still present in 11.10. Unity now works in dualhead. Both
monitors are at 1680x1050 btw.

It does seem to only affect me when I specify 1600x1200.

Title:
second screen in dualhead setup doesn't refresh properly until
reconfigured
Can anyone confirm that this is only an issue with res above 1280x1024
please ?

Title:

I tried Option EXAPixmaps off, but with no change. However, further
experimentation has revealed that if you use Monitor Preferences to set
both monitors to 1280x1024, the screens both behave perfectly - no
trails, no weird colour blocks, everything properly refreshed.
Not really an answer as I
Interestingly, gnome-screenshot doesn't see the display that doesn't
refresh properly. Whereas before the screenshot would be super-wide and
cover both displays, now it's regular 4:3 and covers only the display
that refreshes properly. Maybe that somehow is helpful to those that
know the code?

I don't have a test machine but has anyone tried disabling EXA Pixmaps
with the radeon driver? With Maverick this saved me much trouble on R300
dualhead setup including crashes of the x server...

I'm not sure how I would disable EXA. I searched a bit and found
http://web.archiveorange.com/archive/v/Ky751tZ4E5diWGWdfeKP but they say
there are no alternatives to EXA on R600 or newer (I have R600).

Natty ships with the r600g (g for gallium) now, as opposed to the r600
(with no gallium) that we shipped in maverick. r600g afaik does not
have a non-EXA alternative, so you'd need to boot the old driver to play
with that.

NO! Only EXA Pixmaps!!!
Your xorg.conf should contain a Device Section like this:
Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver radeon
Option EXAPixmaps off
EndSection

I am also experiencing this bug in 11.04 on my Dell Inspiron 9300 (ATI
Radeon mobility X300, M22) using the open source ATI drivers. The bug
only affects the repainting of the background in the main (ie. laptop)
display - active windows within the screen redraw themselves fine when
overlapped and
This same problem indeed still occurs in natty. That unity doesn't work
is probably somehow related to this as well.

Started happening for me after upgrading to Natty and disabling Unity.
The workaround mentioned in bug #378482 (tiling backgrounds) didn't
help, although switching to metacity does (but that has its own
issues...)
