Ubuntu 10.04 LTS was completely unusable. I had to use a console to log
in, start X, use another console to log in as me, start some
panels...Then firefox, thunderbird, vmware, openoffice wouldn't work for
lack of a library or the wrong version of a library.

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
