Today I have installed 10.04-2 alternate (in virtualbox) and the issue seems
fixed.
In fact I haven't forced to uncomment the line suggested by @Michal to boot
from the second disk when first was removed.
Can anyone (@Michal can you?) confirm this?

Confirmed on a physical server: grub in console mode boots from the second disk
without any problems.
My proposed solution is to disable grub graphic console on server installs.

I'm currently trying to reproduce this problem in a KVM VM. As long, as
#GRUB_TERMINAL=console
line is hashed, everything behaves as reported.
Uncommenting this line and running
update-grub
seems to fix the problem.
