upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

Stopping timidity seems to fix the busy problem.
~$ sudo cat /dev/rtc
cat: /dev/rtc: Device or resource busy
~$ sudo /etc/init.d/timidity stop

~$ sudo cat /dev/rtc

In duplicate #134518, Lincoln Stein says: has nothing to do with the

I have the same problem:
- Time is lagging, clock misses about an hour in a day
- /dev/rtc busy when opening, even as root
Problem started a couple of days ago. I just did apt-get upgrade, but
I still can't read /dev/rtc.

I don't know if they above guy still has this bug, but *I* still have it
in Ubuntu Gutsy running 2.6.22-14 ... has this been fixed? It really is
a problem for VMWare as it can't do anything with serial ports on a
timely basis either.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Can you try with latest updates or the latest Ubuntu release?
