the workaround is tu run:
gksu-properties
and then change authentication mode to sudo.

A dirty fix ( what I did) was to edit the menu entry and change it from gksu
to gksudo... my change was merely for a couple GUI apps I use regularly.
Axe's solution seems more system wide and just as easy.

My fresh install machine is not affected, but my upgraded machine from lucid is
affected.

Could you attach the content of /var/log/installer/media-info.
Just type $ cat /var/log/installer/media-info in your terminal.
I would know whether your system is fresh install or upgraded.
