Having read the Xorg.0.log this looks like the following: 1. Xorg not starting in the built-in LCD but the external display: bug #22985 . The MonitorLayout workaround applies to that bug, as well. 2. deactivating bootsplash makes consoles work again: bug #64787 I am not sure why the resolution

So I changed the driver back to ati as originally was, added option monitor layout LVDS,CRT and the driver now works... sort of. the resolution is now something horrible like 600x480 according to screen res prefs (to me it looks a little bit higher, maybe 800x600. Perhaps antialiasing?)
