I have had the same problem vmware-player with 3d acceleration enabled and the
nvidia-current 270.18 using x-updates ppa
I have a dell e6410 with nVidia Corporation GT218 [NVS 3100M]
I have reverted the nvidia package to 260.19 allowed me access to my vm
with acceleration.

I can confirm that reverting to an earlier nvidia driver allows me to
successfully re-enable 3d acceleration for the VM.
