Ok, I got rid of this bug. I had installed nm-applet from the sources
earlier. This caused the binary files to be located in /usr/local/sbin
and /usr/local/bin. Those are earlier in my $PATH and they did not get
overwritten with apt-get install --re-install NetworkManager.
So removing the old
I had the same problem, after installing the gnome3 packages from the
gnome3 ppa (ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3).
I fixed it by running:
gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist
['JavaEmbeddedFrame', 'Mumble', 'Wine', 'Skype', 'hp-systray', 'scp-
dbus-service', 'NetworkManager']

Please provide a screenshot of your desktop. I can't see anything wrong

I noticed these errors would show in Unity anyway.
Please make sure you don't have eth0 (or other interfaces) set up
somewhere in /etc/network/interfaces, and that NM is running.

There must be something else; nmapplet works fine here, and shouldn't
even try to get into the notification area since it's patched to use
indicators instead.
Could you please try the following: create a new user and connect to it
in Unity, or use a guest session to effectively do the same. Does
