Ok, I got rid of this bug. I had installed nm-applet from the sources earlier. This caused the binary files to be located in /usr/local/sbin and /usr/local/bin. Those are earlier in my $PATH and they did not get overwritten with apt-get install --re-install NetworkManager. So removing the old

There must be something else; nmapplet works fine here, and shouldn't even try to get into the notification area since it's patched to use indicators instead. Could you please try the following: create a new user and connect to it in Unity, or use a guest session to effectively do the same. Does
