From what I understand, each shade or glow corresponds to a status like running or nit running. If a user could become esily confused weather an application is open or not. Personally, that would drive me crazy. I think icon changes should be fixed ASAP. On Apr 18, 2011 1:52 AM, Launchpad Bug

Public bug reported: The 'workspaces-switcher', 'apps', 'files' and 'user-trash/user-trash- full' icons are shown in the Launcher with the same glow effect used for the running applications. A border is also drawn around these 4 icons Ideally the glow and the border should be switched off for
