I also experienced this. I had the full Unity crash, and recovered with something like this - the key was unity --reset http://ubuntu4beginners.blogspot.com/2011/04/missing-top-and-side-panels-in-unity.html Then enabled desktop cube with these instructions, which was fine:

I get exactly the same problem on my machine, usually after i play around with the Compiz settings. Only way to get the menu bar back is to log out and log back in again. Locking/unlocking the screen, starting/stopping the screensaver, suspending/resuming the machine all does not work. The

I think this may be the same thing I'm seeing, except when the menu portion of the global menu bar gets corrupted, it is usually replaced by some portion of my desktop. Screenshot attached. I am using an NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT with the binary driver version 270.41.06-0ubuntu1. ** Attachment
