use the linux-image-extra-virtual package which provides support for
this driver.

Seems this is resolved in subsequent releases:

While there, please also add ixgbevf where appropriate:
The ixgbevf driver supports 82599-based virtual function devices that
can only be activated on kernels with CONFIG_PCI_IOV enabled.
