Upgraded to 12.04. The position_fix=1 workaround must still be in alsa-
base.conf, right?
Using totem, audio output loops a large number of times, then recovers.
The initial bug (seconds of silence) does not occur.

Upstream has now agreed to move all of Poulsbo to LPIB (i e
position_fix=1), which I believe is the right thing to do. This will be
in the development release shortly. Thanks for all the testing
everybody!
Setting:
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1
as per comment #48 fixes the same issue for my on a Dell mini 12
