With 12.04 this problem is gone but 2 worse problems replace it.
1) In Nautilus the contents of disk are invisible, making it useless.
2) the launcher buttons for Nautilus and workspace switcher are identical and
UGLY.
I will include a screen shot showing both problems. The screen shot
includes
Hello Ilan

Thanks Fabio,
I just checked that I can't duplicate the Nautilus bug, so I'll drop that one.
I'll try my luck with the ugly launcher icons.
Other than that, it is very nice indeed to see the progress.

I have seen an Ubuntu 12.04 beta and the bug is still there!
Try running the beta from a CD and you will see it.
This bug has been annoying me for 6 months.
I hope it won't be around for yet another 6 months in the upcoming 12.04.
Could someone please fix it?
Thanks,

I would like to amend the bug in that TWO icons are missing, not one.
Not only is the gear missing, but also the volume control with the
Banshee player on it. I noticed the gear because it is so important and
at the edge of the bar, but I missed the volume control which also isn't
there.

Hi Stephen,
I tried your idea since I very much need a work around. I think you are on the
right track but I'm not yet happy with your solution. The ubuntu-mono-light is
the same set of ugly icons as the ambiance. The gnome set is much nicer but
it is missing the gear at the end (the gear

I suspect something is wrong with this file.
I looked in /usr/share/icons/gnome/48x48/devices/ and computer.png is
the icon which is missing from the status bar (at least I think this is
the one which needs to be used). The
I FOUND THE ISSUE. No single PNG files are missing. The theme file
itself is requesting a nonexistant SET of icons. Have a look at file:
/usr/share/themes/HighContrast/index.theme . You will find this at the

GtkTheme=HighContrast
MetacityTheme=Adwaita
IconTheme=gnome
Fabio,
Do you know which png file is missing in order to show the gear on the high
contrast screen? I need a work around until the problem is fixed. Likewise I
haven't upgraded several people to 11.10 because of this problem.
Thanks,
Ilan

In order to reduce Internet time I downloaded a CD and updated both computers
from the same CD. It could be that the CD is missing the png file for the icon
you have showing.
If you can tell me the file name and location I can check it. Likewise, if you
can tell me where to get the missing
