** Description changed:

- On three different types of motherboard, Precise alpha 1 i386 failed to
install from alternate CD or USB despite installing correctly from desktop
version.
- Crash occurred at slightly different places for different hardware. Both
crashes occurred around the time of network configuration. Both crashes machine
wasn't locked up, but merely stalled and some information was available by
pressing Ctrl Alt F4.
- Gigabyte 1155 motherboard, crash just before network configuration. Large
number of error messages. Sample below:
+ On socket 775 motherboards, Precise alpha 1 and 2 i386 fail to install
+ from alternate CD. This happens when CD is overburned to over 700 MB
+ and, in one case, also from a correctly burned DVD version.

- kernel: EXT3-fs (fd0): error: unable to read superblock
- kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
- kernel: /dev/.udev/firmware-missing does not exist, skipping
- kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
+ Significantly, the CD tests OK on the built in tester ("Test CD for
+ defects").

+ Crash occurred around the time of network configuration. Machine is not
+ locked up, but merely stalled and some information was available by
+ pressing Ctrl Alt F4.

Gigabyte G31-M, and Foxconn, both 775 motherboards, install stops
immediately after inputting hostname. Again Ctrl Alt F4 information, no
errors. The last things to be on the screen are several successes with
  these at the end:

DEBUG: Writing DHCP stanza for eth0
  DEBUG: Success!

- Reported on same bug report because fault common to swapping from
- desktop to alternate installs on three different motherboards.
+ (Bug report rewritten after systematic testing with alpha 2.)
