I'm not sure that this is actually a bug. Maybe this is normal
behavior?..

Steps to reproduce:

1) create some empty file padded with 'LF's or 'CRLF's only, about 8kb or more 
in size
2) $ file test-file-LF

On my machine (AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+) with 32kb test file it
tooks about 45 seconds:

$ time file test-file-LF
test: ASCII text

real    0m45.917s
user    0m41.903s
sys     0m0.420s

     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
