Let me echo David and thank you for the explanation, Scott. However, I'm still having a problem that appears to come from this 32-bit subsystem. Specifically, if I go to install Wine, apt wants to remove gettext. Wine recommends, but does not require, gettext:1386, and apt indicates that this

Wine needs its 32 bit subsystem to work on amd64. Even if you could run a 64-bit only Wine, such a thing wouldn't be useful as it wouldn't be able to run a vast majority of windows apps (the 64-bit ones of which also expect a 32-bit subsystem to be available) ** Changed in: wine1.4 (Ubuntu)
