I am sure I speak for everyone here when I say THANKS!
However, the spirit of the bug remains. the pcitutils database
quickly falls out of date and there is no approved way of updating it.
Running update-pciids works perfectly, and voids
/var/lib/dpkg/info/pciutils.md5sums .
Is there hope
This issue has been fixed in the development version of Ubuntu - the Gutsy
Gibbon. Therefore I will close this bug.
pci.ids now contains a daily snapshot of Mon 2007-09-17
pciutils (1:2.2.4-1ubuntu2) gutsy; urgency=low

ok, since the other link to fix this... i'll provide some information on
manually updating the pci id's, when the command:
sudo update-pciids
fails.
step 1) open up the following url in your browser:
http://pciids.sourceforge.net/v2.2/pci.ids
step 2a) if this does not fail, try again.
step
Gutsy tribe 5 still ships with an old pci.ids, with snapshot from 2006-10-27.
Debian unstable still has version pciutils version 2.2.4-1, Gutsy has
2.2.4-1ubuntu1.
Wouldn't it be possible to just make a version 2.2.4-1ubuntu2 with an updated
pci.ids file?
Marked bug 131268 as duplicate, as
pciutils 2.2.5 is out since 4 May 2007
