I don't know if it is the same, but after adding Kubuntu-Desktop and Ubuntu-studio, to a standard Ubuntu install the boot-splash and closing splash do refer to Kubuntu, even if Ubuntu-desktop is reinstalled. This is with 8.10 beta (and with 8.04.1 and even earlier. Grub-update does mention that
