I think this would introduce complexity not required. /var/lock is a
standard directory and there should be no reason to change it unless a
specific need. If so, user should create the new location by himself,

I found the answer.
In synaptic, under settings - preferences - distribution, the
behaviour selected was Prefer version from [ feisty ]. I changed this
to Always prefer the highest version. I can now update Ubuntu. The
confusion is solved and Ubuntu is now fine.

Importance:
I experience the same problems on the MD41300 right now on Feisty. It
freezes very often a day (sometimes even every few minutes).
I wonder if this could be solved by simply booting with nosmp? (or add
ht=off, because it shows 2 CPUs in System Monitor even you said HT is
disabled by default)

1. I do have 3 older p-ata systems, completely incompatible, (and
unworkable) with all versions of (k)ubuntu 7.04, including Linux Mint
Cassandra, based on (k)ubuntu 7.04
2. Lindows/Linspire/Freespire has come out with Freespire 2.0.0.0, also
completely based on
this should now be fixed.
