jcornwall was right: the problem is related to my internal wifi card,
i.e. Atheros AR928X, using the ath9k driver. It turns out that the
somewhat new ath9k driver provided out of the box with Jaunty can't play
nice with avahi.
There's a simple solution however, i.e. upgrading the ath9k driver,
reassigning to linux

When I switch for X to a terminal using alt+fn the screen does not render

Actual: When trying to shut down using FUSE i get a black screen with the
following text:
[6304.837775]
That screen stays there i have to shut box down with power button.
I'm not real sure if this would be abug in hal or not.
This happened with clean install of Jaunty
The gtk1.2 seem to have been removed from Karmic. So this bug needs
fixing before the release.
I asked the Debian maintainer if I could help but he said (in the Debian
bug report) that he would soon upload a newer version (0.9.26.2) which
fixes this bug.

I don't know. As it turns out, the problem is intermittent (in intrepid
it was not - there the extra icons were always present). I will check
nautilus the next time it occurs.

jaunty with dnsmasq. bug still present. firestarter launches dnsmasq but
blocks traffic to it. The workaround /etc/firestarter/user-pre doesn't
seem to work.

After installing pcsx, and trying to emulate a rom, a message as follow
is showed in the console:

well.. i just want to let you know about what i've been trying so far.
Unfortunately, without any success, as the computer keeps hanging
completely at least once a day, but someone may roll out some possible
problems from this.
I must say that the computer doesn't respond to ping after crashing,
This bug is the primary reason I continue to use knetworkmanager. The
inability to manually connect/reconnect to networks makes the plasma
widget essentially useless for anything but the simplest and most
reliable wireless scenarios.
