I'm running Jaunty and are (since Hardy) experiencing the same problems.
I followed this thread which I only found today (luckily).
I spent some two hours to dig a little into the problem and found that
its got to do (as others above pointed out already) with some little
gnome inside

I got what happens to me. After hibernation (when notebook recovers
again), when i definitely login (it asks for my password to login after
hibernation) i can see Ubuntu asks me how I want to shutdown the system,
exactly as if I pressed power button (but I didn't!!). So if I am not

With a new install of Kubuntu 9.04, I have the same of problem as faithful:
- no problem with encrypted root swap
- KDE doesn't ask for password with removable (luks) encrypted volumes.
As soon as I do a sudo cryptsetup luksOpen, I get a notification to
open the corresponding decrypted fs.

application rapidly eating up memory until swap space is exhausted.

Just to mention that I am experiencing the same problem with DELL XPS
M1710 on ubuntu 64 bit (both 8.10 and 8.04).
The system randomly get the fans running at full speed despite the
system monitor report CPU usage below 25% and temperature below 40
degrees.
When the fans kick in, the system slow
These patches are intrusive and touch critical parts of the IPv4 stack.
We will wait for these to go upstream.

Sorry for not responding.
Problem was solved by reverting the xorg driver as suggested by Eddie
Padilla above.
The trick to getting around the startx command problems that I had
reported earlier was to use ctrl+alt+F7 instead. For whatever reason,
that worked.

Trying to receive the following r232 sequence (9600N81) on ttyS0 with Serial
port terminal
d1 fa fb 00 0a ff. This sequence is sent by another PC with a null modem cable
which works in XP. In ubuntu 9.04 I receive distorted data, mostly unpredictable
