When xterm starts from the launcher, the window dies 50% of the time.
When started from the command-line, I see it segfault just as

I have the same problem with a first generation Macbook. Disabling KMS
makes brightness work again.
Changing the brightness with ACPI doesn't work, the /sys/class/backlight
directory is empty.

I have fixed this issue after some experimenting. I'd tried various
'apt-get purge' and uninstall approaches, but whenever I tried the
reinstall I got the above error message.

I found a workaround: installing the package ghostscript-cups.
note: I am using the ppa jaunty-bleed, and I suspect that this is the cause
of the problem (but not sure).
