This patch attached should do just that.
It's a slight modification of another part of the gdm code that
disallows the showing of system users in the selection screen. Copied it
into the do_accredit stage of the user authorisation, tested and it
works as expected.

Thanks to comment #19 (above), I seemed to have fixed things by setting
junk preferences globally. I had already enabled junk filtering by
account.
Apparently junk filtering must be enabled at *both* the global and the
account level for it to work at all. Not sure if this is a bug or a
feature,

generated but for a new user who doesn't know that trick an option like

I can't seem to make my CH Fighterstick Pro and my CH Pro Throttle work
on my Karmic Koala (9.10) 64 bit system. The CH Pro Pedals joystick
seems to work just fine on the same system.
Interestingly, the joysticks do register:

I had the same problem on Ubuntu 9.10 x86-64. It went away after I
installed gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs and all gstreamer0.10-plugins-*.
Unfortunately, I did it in one step and I can't pinpoint the package
that solved it.
